I have worked with Leigh Hubner over the course of the last three years on some of the biggest rating and highest profile sports events on Australian television in his capacity as a Steadicam cameraman. These include Rugby League Finals and Grand Finals, State of Origins and Test Matches and I can say with no hesitation that Leigh is one of the best cameramen in his area of expertise. What sets Leigh apart is that he is a cameraman with an artist’s sensibilities, and it is not exaggerating to say that he created some of the set pieces that are now standard practice for us. I’ve worked with Leigh on a variety of shoots, including a Darren Hayes concert at the Sydney Opera House and a music video for Axle Whitehead. We’ve shot digital betacam, HD and 35mm film and some of the most memorable moments were Leigh’s innovative Steadicam shots. On the live concert work, I was particularly impressed with Leigh’s ability to not only get right up close to the action and track smoothly in long shots from onstage continuing through to the audience, but to also operate the camera in a more freeform mode. When it comes to being a cameraman in the television and commercial production industry, talent, attention to detail and quality work ethic are prerequisites. When you find someone who excels with every attribute, you clearly have a talented individual. Leigh Hubner is indeed that person.
